Flex Your Power Over Situations!

“Your power is in you not giving up, but instead taking your power back over a situation. Flex your power and take control of the situation”

-Dr. Kay Lo Jo

A moment of transparency

Over the past few months, I have endured many situations that have felt insurmountable. For me, it has been extremely frustrating. It has been a scary experience. It feels like a damning experience. I often wonder, what in the world did I do wrong to constantly go into so many critical moments? In opening up about my feelings, I have learned that many others have been dealing with similar feelings and situations. I found myself able to advise others through their situations, but I fail to take my own advice.

A Moment of Self-Reflection

This has been a common theme of mine. I can help and advise others, but in my own mess, I just sink deeper and deeper. I feel like I’m just in stuck in quicksand, reaching up for help, but I just cannot seem to grip on to anything or anyone. With others who may also feel like they are sinking, I am able to easily devise a plan for them to pull themselves out, but I will not help myself sometimes. I have gotten myself deeper and deeper by making off the whim decisions. I’ll tell you all about the current trap I put myself into later once I’ve pulled myself out. Lol. But making impulsive decisions have been my downfall.

So, What do you suggest?

I have made a promise to myself to not make any more panic decisions. Yes, it’s always good to have a backup plan, but make sure the backup plan is one that you’re actually interested in doing. Don’t just accept an offer, start a new routine, go a new direction… because you are afraid that you will not have other options. So, when faced with a situation that does not seem to be going in your favor:

1.    Breathe

·        Do a breathing exercise. This will help lead you to #2.

2.    Take time to clear your mind

·        Do not make important decisions with a stressed or distracted mind, this often leads to impulsive decisions.

3.    Weigh your options

·        What are the alternatives?

·        Have I done all of the research I could do?

·        What are the pros and cons of this decision? -and yes, write down out a list

·        If this decision does not work out, is there a way out? If not, can I endure?

4.    Make intentional decisions:

·        Ask yourself, will this decision lead me to my goal?

·        How will this decision contribute to my goal?

·        Is this something that I’m truly interested in?

5.    FLEX YOUR POWER!

·        Take control over those situations that feel out of your control

·        Do not continue to sink deeper by making impulsive decisions

·        Make sure your decisions serve the purpose of longevity and not just instant gratification
